Maths at Elm Hall Primary School

My name is Alice Knight and I am the Maths lead at Elm Hall Primary School. At Elm Hall, we create a sense of curiosity, passion and enjoyment surrounding Maths and believe that ALL children are mathematicians. We pride ourselves on placing our children at the heart of our curriculum and adapt our small steps in learning accordingly, in order for every child to meet their full potential.

The National Curriculum 2014 states -

'Mathematics is essential to everyday life, critical to science, technology and engineering, and necessary for financial literacy and most forms of employment. A high-quality mathematics education therefore provides a foundation for understanding the world, the ability to reason mathematically, an appreciation of the beauty and power of mathematics, and a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject.'

Here at Elm Hall we believe that our Elm Hall attitudes are vital to our children seeing themselves as 'real' mathematicians and applying their mathematical reasoning and problem solving skills, not only across the curriculum, but throughout their everyday lives. Resilience, determination, independence, collaboration and reflection are just some of the attitudes that ensure we develop lifelong learners.

Our Learning Aims

At Elm Hall we aspire to...

  • deliver a mathematics curriculum which places the child at the heart of the process, enabling every child to reach their potential
  • enable children to develop a positive attitude towards mathematics, where all children feel curious, successful and motivated
  • develop children's confidence in using and applying the skills that they have learnt across lessons, sequences, units and year groups
  • provide opportunities to develop fluency and to apply this knowledge through reasoning, problem solving, enquiry and investigation
  • develop children's ability to work both independently and collaboratively with others
  • build children's confidence in mathematical discussion by encouraging children to use mathematical language and questioning skills
  • provide opportunities to share our successes and mistakes, with the understanding that both of these help us to become better learners
  • provide opportunities for children's to think logically and be systematic in their work
  • encourage children to apply mathematical knowledge across all areas of their learning and in real life situations will the ultimate aim of becoming life-long learners

What do we learn?

How Do We Learn?

We follow the White Rose approach as the basis for our Mathematics curriculum.

This approach is centred around the principle of Maths Mastery. It places an emphasis on developing children’s understanding of number and their ability to flexibly use and apply it to other areas of the maths curriculum. Within this scheme children have a much longer block of time to access each area of mathematics which reinforces White Rose's approach of encouraging children to deepen their understanding of an objective and master it's application before moving on. Children are regularly given opportunities to revisit and apply this knowledge throughout the year to strengthen and deepen their understanding. The children are encouraged to practice and develop their competency within each area, reason and talk about their maths and use and apply what they have learnt in order to make links to other areas of mathematics.

How Can Parents Help?

As part of the Attain academy trust, maths subject leaders have produced support guides for each year group with strategies, websites and images that can be used by parents and family members, at home, to support the key learning objectives for each year group.

Meet Our Subject Ambassadors 2023-2024

Aiden D - Year 4

Ellie D & Bobby W - Year 5

Archie N & Matilda H - Year 6

What did we achieve last year?

  • We photographed evidence of Maths teaching and learning to help us gain an understanding of how Maths is taught across the school
  • We discussed what we thought was positive about the maths in our school
