Shackleton Class - Year 3
Welcome to Shackleton Class where we encourage our learners to demonstrate determination, perseverance and an adventurous attitude like our namesake Sir Ernest Shackleton. Accompanying and teaching year three pupils on their learning expedition will be: Mrs Shoard (Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday) and Mrs Forbes (Thursday and Friday).
In year three, we strive to provide a nurturing, supportive and engaging environment to help children to fulfil their full potential. As in all classes, we have our Elm Hall Attitudes display to encourage and promote personal development. When the children have demonstrated one of these qualities, we celebrate this by placing their name on the board. Together with the Recognition board, the Elm Hall Attitudes help to inspire the children to develop positive outlooks which we hope they will carry with them onto their next adventure. We also encourage a growth mindset throughout the school to help foster an attitude of perseverance and resilience to challenges set.
Our Day
Our door opens at 8.40am and children need to be in class by 8.45am for the register. As soon as your child enters the classroom, learning begins promptly so please help your child to be on time. If you need to share any messages or have a question, then please speak to the class teacher or LSAs in our class. We work in partnership with parents and families to ensure positive and supportive relationships to help enhance the outcomes of all children. We want to assist and support wherever we can.
Home time is 3:00pm. Children will be seen out from the classroom door to an agreed adult. If your collection arrangements change, please ensure you inform a member of staff.
Reading
We consider reading an integral part of learning and it is at the heart of our school. Children will be given time during the day to choose/change a reading book. The children will need to bring their reading book in on a daily basis as there is an allocated reading session at school where they will also have the opportunity to read and quiz on their book. It is important that children maintain regular reading of 15-30 minutes at home. In year three, we still encourage children to read to an adult daily to help further develop a hugely important skill. Please support your child with this and write in their Reading Record so that their progress at home is also recorded.
P.E
We have PE lessons on a Wednesday but this can vary from term to term (due to external providers or hall allocations) so please make sure your child has a full, named indoor and outdoor PE kit in school. Earrings must be removed for PE, and long hair must be tied back. Staff are not permitted to remove earrings for a child, or put them in. A spare hair band kept in school for PE would be useful
Naming Items
Please ensure all items such as coats, lunch boxes, hats and sun cream (during the warmer months), reading folders, bags, winter wear (scarves and gloves) are all named so they can be returned to their rightful owner.
Drinks, Snacks and Lunchboxes
Although drinking water is available in class, we recommend that the children have a named bottle of water in school. At 10:15am, the children have the opportunity to eat a healthy snack, provided by home, but we ask that any grapes are cut lengthways to avoid choking hazards. Please be aware that children will not be allowed to share snacks as some children have food allergies. We also ask that any snack pots are named.
Homework
Weekly homework tasks will be set on Friday, to be handed in by the following Thursday. Homework tasks may vary but predominantly involve spellings and a maths task. Children may also be given ‘projects’ at the end of a half-term to encourage them to develop an insight into their next topic. Daily reading also forms an important part of your child’s homework. Please support your child with their work and reading at home.
Many thanks and welcome to Shackleton Class.
Our Class Teachers are Mrs Jones and Mrs Forbes. They are supported in class by Mrs Jones and Miss Wilkins.
