Hawking Class - Year 6
Welcome to Hawking Class where our quest is one of continual discovery and learning, like our namesake Stephen Hawking.
Our door opens at 8.40am, and children need to be in class by 8.45am for the register. Learning begins immediately so please help your child to be punctual.
We send a reading book home every night in their book bag. Please ensure that this comes back into school every day as we have a reading session in school every day. It is important that your child reads every night for 30 minutes at least 4 days a week. Each stage of your reading journey is important. Even in Years 5 and 6, most children will benefit from reading to an adult. It is at this stage that our children will move from 'learning to read' to 'reading to learn'.
We have PE lessons on various days throughout the year; we will warn you of changes in advance so that the children can arrive in school with their PE kit on. Earrings must be removed for PE, and long hair must be tied back. Staff are not permitted to remove earrings for a child, or put them in. A spare hair band kept in school for PE would be useful.
Your child will need to bring a drink to school daily. Please make sure that their drink bottle is named, as well as all their clothing and any snack pot or lunch box. Children have a chance to have a healthy snack at 10.15am (fruit/vegetables only). Please make sure any grapes are sliced in half lengthways.
Like all classes, we have an Elm Hall Attitude board to encourage our children to practise real-life skills (such as resilience, respect, collaboration etc) which will benefit them in their learning and beyond. We reward these skills with stickers (with the Elm Hall Attitude displayed) which allow our chidlren to celebrate their success with you at home.
Children will be given various homework tasks to complete. Please remind your child to complete their homework, which they should be able to do independently. Homework will usually be set on a Friday, to be handed in the following Thursday. It should take around 15 minutes. Daily reading also forms an important part of your child's homework. Homework may also be set using study books (purchased by the school) and this will be sent out in a detailed email prior to commencing.
At home time, we will only allow you or an agreed adult to collect your child. If someone else is picking up your child, please inform an adult or the School Office. If your child is allowed to walk home on their own, please send in a letter explaining this.
If necessary, children in Year 6 may bring a mobile phone into school. Please note that they will not be permitted to use the phone, especially the camera, on school premises. Phones must be handed in to an adult in the classroom on arrival, and will not be returned to the child until they leave school.
Children in Year 6 sit their KS2 SATS during the second week of May. No holiday leave can be approved for this week.
Our Class Teacher in Hawking Class is Mrs Mansfield. She is supported in class by Mrs Griggs.
